Using Solar Energy to Maximum Benefit with ACRYLITE®
Evonik Cyro LLC is now launching the third part of its campaign "This is what climate protection looks like," with a focus on power generation. Transparent plastics are particularly suitable for many forms of solar power generation. Foremost among these materials is ACRYLITE® , which offers high light transmission combined with excellent weather resistance. That makes CO2-neutral power plants more efficient and economical for decades of service. Unlike ACRYLITE, other transparent plastics turn yellow in the course of time and their luminous efficiency drops accordingly. ACRYLITE remains permanently transparent, a property that comes with a long-term guarantee.
"Today, there are a number of alternative power-generation methods for which ACRYLITE is the ideal material, ranging from solar cells with Fresnel lenses to solar updraft towers or the commercially available SunShower™," says Stephen Costanzo, General Manager of the Acrylic Sheet Business Line at Evonik Cyro. The SunShower™ is a garden shower that produces hot water with heat-reflecting ACRYLITE® Heatstop acrylic sheet. This principle can be employed for other applications such as supplying hot water for swimming pools and buildings.
In the future, alternative energies will have to cover an increasing share of the global power supply if we are to effectively protect the climate. Solar energy will be of central importance. "ACRYLITE already helps to significantly improve the efficiency of solar systems. Our researchers are therefore involved in developing a number of future-ready solar applications that we will be presenting shortly," Costanzo says.
The ACRYLITE climate protection campaign was launched this past summer. So far it has presented the themes of heat insulation in greenhouses, and air conditioning in buildings with ACRYLITE sheet. Power generation is the third focal point. For more information, go to www.acrylite-and-energy.com.
